What do I need to apply?

To be eligible to apply online, you must be:

  • Aged 66 or over. For Joint applications both applicants must be aged 66 and over.
  • Resident in the Republic of Ireland OR moving to the Republic of Ireland in the next 45 days

To apply, you’ll need:

  • A valid photo identification: The documents we accept are your passport, drivers license card, or EU National ID card.
  • Proof of address: The documents we accept can include a utility bill, a financial statement, or a letter from the Revenue Commissioners, an approved university, the CAO, the Department of Social Welfare, or the Naturalisation and Immigration Service.
  • We’ll also ask you to take a selfie in the application form so make sure you’re camera ready.

Please note: Proof of address documents must be in English. If your documents are not in English, they must be translated & certified before you start the application. You must update your address to an Irish postal address within 60 days of opening your account.

The translated document can be certified by one of the following:

  • Registered notary public
  • Practising legal professional
  • Embassy or government official

  • What is a current account?

    A personal current account is a bank account for your everyday use. You can put money in and take it out on demand. It often includes a debit card and online banking. You can also set up regular payments.

    Some current accounts let you apply for other products, like an overdraft or chequebook.

    Unlike a savings account that earns interest, current accounts are for regular use. People use them to manage their income and pay bills. They do not usually earn interest.

  • How do I apply for a Golden Years current account?

    You can apply for a Golden Years current account online, over the phone, or in your local branch. For joint accounts, we’ll only be able to open a Golden Years current account if both applicants are aged 66 or over.

    • Online – Choose the device (mobile or computer) you want apply on and get your details ready. You will need to upload:
      • A valid form of photo ID
      • Proof of address

      Here’s a list of acceptable documents. Then follow the on-screen instructions. We’ll ask you to take a selfie in the application form, so make sure you are camera ready.

      For joint applications, we’ll send the second applicant an email with a link, so they can fill in their part of the application and upload their ID and Proof of address.

    • Branch – Visit your local branch and fill in the application form using a Kiosk or with the help of a staff member. You can give your photo identification (ID) and proof of address to a branch staff member, or you can upload them yourself using the link that will be emailed to you after you submit the application.
    • Phone – Call one of our agents on 0818 354 454 (or +353 1 404 4034 outside the Republic of Ireland) and complete an application over the phone. Lines are open 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. The agent will fill in the application for you; just provide your details during the call. When the agent submits the application, you will receive an email with a link to upload your photo identification (ID) and proof of address.

    When you submit your application, you’ll get an email from us with a copy of important documents. Take some time to read through them. If your application is successful, we’ll text you your BIC and IBAN within three days. Take note of these details and keep them safe.

  • How much are Golden Years current account fees and charges?

    We don’t charge an account maintenance fee on our Golden Years current account. There may be charges for things like Government Stamp Duty, and when you make international payments.

  • I am not an Irish national. Can I apply for a current account?

    Yes. You can apply for a current account if you are not an Irish national and are resident in the Republic of Ireland. Our current account comparison table lets you compare the different types of current accounts we have. After you submit your application, you may be asked to provide more information like evidence of source of funds, or your source of money. If more information is required, we will email you.

    If you are not resident in the Republic of Ireland: But you plan to move to the Republic of Ireland in the next 45 days, you can apply for a Personal current account.
